Mr. Wolf's Pancakes Lesson Plan

I use Mr. Wolf's Pancakes as part of a unit on "fractured fairy tales." Students love the humor and enjoy this goofy take on "The Little Red Hen."

OBJECTIVE
Students will "write number sentences using math symbols to represent mathematical relationships in everyday situations." --Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks

MATERIALS

Mr. Wolf's Pancakes by Jan Fearnley
chart paper
marker

SET UP AND PREPARE

Label the chart paper "Mr. Wolf's Grocery List."

DIRECTIONS
Work with students to create a shopping list for Mr. Wolf. Items should include milk, eggs, and flour, but you may want to add apples, blueberries, maple syrup, bacon, butter, and/or sausage.

Once the list is complete, add some simple prices to the items. Be sure to choose prices that are appropriate for your students. You want them to be challenged, but not frustrated. Ask students to compute what some of the different ingredients would cost. For example, label the eggs 25 cents and the milk 5 cents, and ask, "If Mr. Wolf only needed to buy eggs and milk, how much money would he need?"

LESSON EXTENSION
Use the pancake recipe from the Pancakes! Pancakes! lesson plan to have a pancake party with your students. Have them dress up as their favorite fairy tale character.

Give students paper and pencils to write out their own shopping questions.
