House for Hermit Crab Lesson Plan

I use A House for Hermit Crab in an Eric Carle author study. Children love Eric Carle's colorful illustrations and animal characters. In this lesson, students will "retell important facts from a text heard or read."--Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework

OBJECTIVE
Students will "retell important facts from a text heard or read."--Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework

MATERIALS

  • A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle
  • oak tag, one sheet per student
  • marker
  • glue
  • colored pencils
  • clipart images of coral, seaweed, lantern fish, sea anemone, starfish, snails, sea urchins, pebbles, sponges, barnacles, clown fish, sand dollars, electric eels

SET UP AND PREPARE
Draw a picture of Hermit Crab on a sheet of 8 1/2" X 11" paper.  Make the picture large and use a dark marker so the lines show well.  Use the copier to make copies of the drawing on oak tag.

Cut apart the clip art images so you have multiple copies for students.

DIRECTIONS
Have students write their name on their hermit crab oak tag and color it using the colored pencils. Retell the story, with students gluing on the corresponding sea creatures as you read. If they have extra sea creatures, have them add them at the end.

LESSON EXTENSION
Instead of gluing the sea creatures to the hermit crab oak tag, have students store the pieces in an envelope. They can then manipulate the pieces as they retell the story.
