We All Need Sleep

OBJECTIVE
Students learn why everyone needs sound sleep every day

MATERIALS

DIRECTIONS

  1. Have a discussion about sleep. Start by talking about why we need sleep. List on chart paper these three key reasons why children need sleep: for energy to learn and play; to help heal cuts and bruises and get better if they are sick; to help their bodies grow.

  2. Describe how children might feel if they wake up in the morning and are still tired (e.g., cranky, not hungry, not much energy). Point out that getting good sleep all through the night is important for feeling rested. Confirm that children should tell a parent if they feel tired, have trouble swallowing or breathing, or don't feel like eating when they wake up in the morning and during the day.

  3. Make copies and distribute Reproducible 3 to review the health benefits of sleep. Guide children to complete Part 1.

Wrap Up:

Ask children to read the selection in Part 2, "Sleep and Breathe," and answer the question that follows. Invite children to take their completed storybook activity home to share with their families.
