Grouchy Ladybug Lesson Plan

Teaching kindergarten, I kick off the school year with an Eric Carle author study. The Grouchy Ladybug is a great book to use when talking about time, size, and sharing. Children love Eric Carle's colorful illustrations and animal characters.

OBJECTIVE
Students will "sort and classify objects by color, shape, size, number, and other properties." --Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework

MATERIALS

  • The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle
  • copies of all of the creatures the ladybug meets. If necessary, make adjustments to their size to keep them in proportion.
  • tape
  • chart paper

SET UP AND PREPARE
Use legal size paper to make the copy of the whale. Cut out the copies of the creatures the ladybug meets.

DIRECTIONS
Meeting as a group, spread out the copies of the animals. Explain that you will be sorting according to size, going from smallest to largest. Have students take turns taping the copies to the chart paper, in size order.

LESSON EXTENSION

Try labeling the pictures according to the order in which they appeared in the story, ie. first, second, third, etc.
Use chalk to draw life-size outlines of the animals on pavement.
