The Mix in New York
From the big city to sprawling farmland, New York has it all

My name is Michael Carboni. I live in West Islip, New York, on Long Island.

Our town always has something going on. For example, each year we have the West Islip County Fair, the Our Lady of Lourdes Italian Feast, the Memorial Day Parade, and Homecoming. Since I live on an island, summer is very special, too. We have beautiful beaches and lots of water activities.

The West Islip School district adds a lot to our community. I attend Oquenock Elementary School. It is named after Native Americans who used to live here.

There are many after-school clubs and our school sport teams rule! The lacrosse team won the state championship two years in a row. The tennis team also won the state championship this year. The football team participated in the Long Island championship and went to the final round.

West Islip is a small part of a well-known state: New York. It is packed with history. New York was one of the original 13 colonies. Two famous Native American tribes lived here hundreds of years ago. They were the Iroquois and Algonquin Indians.

In the 1590s and the 1600s, colonists came. Legend has it that the Dutch bought New York City from the Algonquin tribe for $24. During the Revolutionary War, there were two main bases in New York. The British had a base in New York City and the Patriots had one in Mount Vernon. After the colonist won their independence, New York City became the first capital of the United States of America. Sixteen months later, the capital city moved to its current home in Washington D.C.

New York is beautiful state. There are two mountain ranges: the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. The Adirondack Mountains are bigger and have the highest point in New York (Mt. Marcy). The state also has many lakes, rivers and beaches. In New York there is a mix of cities, suburbs, and farmland. As an example there is New York City (which is a city), West Islip (which is suburb), and most of eastern Long Island (which is farmland).

My state is known all over the world for our famous New York City. It is the biggest city in the United States. There is so much to do and see there. You can go to plays, sporting events, concerts, museums, art shows, and so much more. Can you believe that kids our age play soccer on rooftops? I didn't until recently when I joined them. It was so cool!

New York city is also known for all its famous buildings like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the United Nations headquarters. With all these activities, the sightseeing and the shopping, people refer to New York City as the city that never sleeps. I can sure understand why!

I'm proud to live in New York. As you can see my community and state are really great. Don't you think so, too?

The Seems: The Glitch In Sleep

The Seems: The Glitch In Sleep

by John Hulme and Michael Wexler

The world as you know it was created and is still maintained by The Seems. From the Department of Weather to the Department of Emotions, the Seems ensure our world is just as we like it. Occasionally, something in one of these departments will break down, and a Fixer is sent in to repair it before there is damage to our world. Becker Drane may seem like your average 7th grader, but he's actually one of 37 Fixers in the entire world, and is just about to embark on his first mission. Will Becker fix the Glitch in Sleep and become the hero of the Seems, or will his first assignment be his last?

Michael Wexler and John Hulme are the editors of Voices of the Xiled, a short story collection for adults, and authors of other works of adult nonfiction. Michael and John both live in the New York City area.
