The Land of Firsts
Connecticut is home to history, inventors, and wildlife

What do the Frisbees, lollipops, and submarines have in common? They were all invented in Connecticut.

The state of Connecticut is known as the “Land of the Firsts” because so many things were first discovered or invented here. A couple more examples of Connecticut “firsts” are the payphone and the first hamburger served in America.

A lot of famous people have lived in Connecticut, including Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin. It was also the home of Mark Twain, who wrote a lot of famous books including Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn. Connecticut was also home to another famous author named Harriet Beecher Stowe. She wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Connecticut is known for inventions and famous people as well as a beautiful place to live. We have a pretty shoreline and hills full of trees. Connecticut is one of the smallest states in the U.S, but is full of variety and entertainment. There is always something fun to do in my town.

New Haven, Connecticut is the home of Yale University. The first Frisbee was actually discovered by Yale students playing with pie tins from Mrs. Frisbee Pies. When students discovered that they could sail the empty pie plates across the New Haven Green a new sport was born!

The state animal of Connecticut is the sperm whale. Whaling was an important industry for early settlers of Connecticut because whale oil was used for fuel long ago. You can learn all about the whaling life at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut. The seaport has old whaling ships that visitors can tour.

Visitors can learn about life on the ships including how people got food and water, washed their clothes and took baths. The tour is educational and also a little spooky. At Mystic Seaport they say that there are ghosts walking among the ships.

My favorite part about Connecticut is my town of Orange. I like where I live because I have woods behind my house. The woods are home to a lot of animals and are also great for exploration. I like to watch the deer and turkeys walk through the woods looking for food. Sometimes they come into my yard and I get to seem them up close.

I also like to play in the woods and discover new things. I just discovered a swamp in the woods yesterday. I’m glad that my town has lots of space to explore.

    The Great Gilly Hopkins

    by Katherine Paterson

How can the great Gilly Hopkins be expected to tolerate an ignorant foster mother, a freaky foster brother, or the poetry-loving black man next door? At first Gilly despises them all, but finds herself being slowly drawn into their circle of love. "Genuinely moving, frequently funny, and sparkling with memorable encounters." - Kirkus
