Pennsylvania: Home to History and Chocolate

I am about to tell you why Wayne and Pennsylvania are so special. I will start with Pennsylvania.

We have two big cities: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. We also have two baseball teams, two football teams, and two hockey teams. You might not know this, but Pennsylvania was the second state in the nation to have electricity.

The Liberty Bell is also here in Philadelphia. Most people know our city for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The first public zoo and the first public library are here, too.

We also have the biggest chocolate factory in the world. A Pennsylvanian named Milton Hershey began the Hershey’s candy company here.

Pennsylvania, settled in 1643, is also known for the very first hospital, cable TV programming, and banana split. We have 116 state parks and 67 counties. Did you know that our largest county, Lycoming County, is bigger than Rhode Island?

My hometown of Wayne, Pennsylvania, is really special. It is named after General ‘Mad’ Anthony Wayne. We have a movie theater named after him right in the center of town. Wayne was a famous general in the Revolutionary War.

Wayne is only about one mile from Valley Forge, home of a big Military Academy. When they cadets have free time, they like to walk in Wayne.

Wayne is closest to the Eastern Side of Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Philadelphia. Our population is small, but did you know that Lancaster County’s population is bigger than all of Wyoming?

Wayne is home to lots of wildlife like deer, frogs, foxes, rabbits, and more. Most live near the trees.

So why is Wayne and Pennsylvania so special? I think because of the sports, wildlife, history, and more. I enjoyed writing about why we are special and I hope you enjoyed reading about it.

by John Hulme and Michael Wexler

The world as you know it was created and is still maintained by The Seems. From the Department of Weather to the Department of Emotions, the Seems ensure our world is just as we like it. Occasionally, something in one of these departments will break down, and a Fixer is sent in to repair it before there is damage to our world. Becker Drane may seem like your average 7th grader, but he's actually one of 37 Fixers in the entire world, and is just about to embark on his first mission. Will Becker fix the Glitch in Sleep and become the hero of the Seems, or will his first assignment be his last?

Michael Wexler and John Hulme are the editors of Voices of the Xiled, a short story collection for adults, and authors of other works of adult nonfiction. Michael and John both live in the New York City area.
