Jonah Winter

Biography

Jonah Winter was born in the year of 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. Instead of going to the rodeo or playing football, Jonah spent most of his childhood painting pictures, playing musical instruments, and writing poems. When he wasn't doing these things, he was either collecting baseball cards, studying his baseball cards, or trading his baseball cards.

Now, as an adult, Jonah makes his living painting pictures, playing musical instruments, and writing poems and children's books. And guess what? He still has all his baseball cards from when he was a boy. They are in a satchel, which he keeps beneath his bed. Sometimes, late at night, he takes them out and studies them.

Recently, Jonah was able to combine several of his interests in one project. It was a children's book called Fair Ball! 14 Great Stars from Baseball's Negro Leagues. Jonah wrote it and illustrated it. Because the subject was baseball, Jonah decided to paint the pictures in the shape of baseball cards. And in order to do this correctly, it was, of course, necessary to study those old baseball cards once againÂ…

The other children's books Jonah has written are all biographies about Jonah's favorite people: artists, musicians, and baseball players. His most recent book is called Frida, and it is about the greatest Mexican artist of all time, Frida Kahlo. This book was illustrated by somebody else, a fantastic Spanish artist named Ana Juan. It is available in bookstores near you!

    Frida

by Jonah Winter and Ana Juan

When her mother was worn out from caring for her five sisters, her father gave her lessons in brushwork and color. When polio kept her bedridden for nine months, drawing saved her from boredom. When a bus accident left her in unimaginable agony, her paintings expressed her pain and depression and eventually, her joys and triumphs. Again and again, Frida Kahlo turned the challenges of her life into art.

Now Jonah Winter and Ana Juan have drawn on both the art and the life to create an insi
