Brian Jacques

Biography

“I sometimes think it ironic for an ex-seaman, longshoreman, truck driver, policeman, bus driver, etc. . . to find success writing children's novels,” says Brian Jacques (pronounced “Jakes”). Yet it is all too true. Since the publication of his first children's book, the award-winning Redwall, in 1987, Jacques' fresh talent has received exceptional praise from reviewers in the United States and England. Newbery Award-winner Lloyd Alexander called Redwall “a fine work, literate, witty, filled with the excitement of genuine storytelling. Young people will surely be captivated. I hope they give their elders a chance to share the delights.”

A well-known radio personality in his native Liverpool — as well as an actor, stand-up comic, and playwright — Brian Jacques is the host of “Jakestown” on BBC Radio Merseyside. Ever the performer, Jacques is well-known for applying his acting and entertainment background in his presentations to legions of young fans at schools across the United States and England.

    Castaways of the Flying Dutchman

    by Brian Jacques

A boy and dog trapped aboard the legendary ship, the Flying Dutchman, are sent off on an eternal journey by an avenging angel, roaming the earth throughout the centuries in search of those in need. Their travels lead them to Chapelvale, a sleepy nineteenth century village whose very existence is at stake. Only by discovering the buried secrets and solving the dust-laden riddles of the ancient village can it be saved. This will take the will and wile of all the people-and a very special boy and dog! Brian Jacques turns from Redwall to a very different sort of story, and succeeds admirably.
