Governor
In a closely contested race, pollsters predicted that Democrat Martin O’Malley would become the next Governor of Maryland. O’Malley, the current mayor of Baltimore, ousted current Governor, Robert Ehrlich. O’Malley won the election with 53 percent of the vote, compared to Ehrlich’s 46 percent.
O’Malley was elected mayor of Baltimore in 1999, winning re-election in 2004. Ehrlich was elected Governor in 2002 after serving in the U.S. Congress. His election as Governor was a surprise in Maryland, which is usually thought of as a very Democratic state and which had not had a Republican governor for more than 30 years.
Senate Race
In a closely watched Senate race, Democratic Congressman Ben Cardin was elected to replace retiring, long-time Senator Paul Sarbanes. Holding onto this seat in the heavily Democratic state of Maryland was seen as a crucial step in the Democrats’ attempts to control the Senate. With 54 percent of the vote, Cardin won against Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele.
