Can politics be good for you and delicious too? Yes, according to Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The former Governor of Arkansas introduced the "Huckaburger" Monday afternoon at the Barley House Restaurant in Concord, New Hampshire.
To this hungry reporter, the Huckaburger tasted great. The lean patty was covered with baby spinach leaves and a slice of tomato. But a deep-fried pickle—a specialty of Arkansas—may have offset the nutritional value of the vegetables.
Barley House Chef Brian Shea created the unusual burger. "We wanted to do something fun," he told Scholastic News. "And we wanted to make it healthy."
But the event wasn't all about food. It also was about votes—and appealing to voters on "Main Street America." Scholastic News asked the candidate what Main Street means to him.
"It's where people try to operate small businesses, whether it's a grocery store or dry cleaners," Huckabee said. "It's where people sit around their kitchen tables and wonder how they're going to pay for their gas and how they're going to pay for their health care and how well their kids will do in school."
Huckabee seemed genuinely interested in the views of the next generation.
"Every day I'm President, I'm going to be more concerned about your future than mine," he told Scholastic News. "If it's not helping your future, better education, better health care, safer streets, safer borders, safer world, then I'm not doing my job. The next president will have a much bigger impact on your life than on people my age. This election is more important to you than it is to me."
So, will the Huckaburger be a permanent item on the Barley House menu? "It depends on how it sells," said Chef Shea.
