Five Big Deals

August 2007

The Commonwealth of Kentucky will participate in a five-year, $6 million study funded by the U.S. Department of Education and conducted by Rand Corporation. Kentucky is one of six regions or districts selected to evaluate the effectiveness of Carnegie Learning’s technology-based Algebra I curriculum. Thirty-three Kentucky middle schools and high schools with 3100 Algebra I students will participate.

The Bucks County (PA) Schools Intermediate Unit #22 purchased Library Video Company’s (LVC) SAFARI Montage WAN Manager, the WAN-based, video-on-demand and digital media management system for all of its 13 districts and 137 schools. SAFARI offers the ability to access, manage, and disseminate the best educational video content digitally throughout the county.

The Louisiana Department of Education purchased E-Rate Manager for Applicants to help them manage the E-Rate process for their Recovery School District (RSD). With more than 50 schools associated with the RSD, the project aims to turn around failing schools within the state.

Los Angeles–based Alliance for College Ready Public Schools received $10 million in grants led by the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation to help open 13 new charter schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In September 2007, three will open, bringing the total schools in operation to ten. All Alliance charter schools outperformed their neighboring LAUSD schools on the 2006 Academic Performance Index (API).

The 32,000-student Aurora (NY) Public Schools has contracted with The Princeton Review to develop low-stakes tests which allow educators to monitor students’ progress and identify problems during the school year. The tests cover multiple subject areas, including math, reading, and writing, and are aligned to state standards and to meet NCLB requirements. The contract also provides for some assessments to be administered in Spanish, and to be used as an academic screening for new-to-English students.
