The battle of the bulge is now being fought on school turfs nationwide. In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger challenged 20,000 students to be active for 30 to 60 minutes several times a week—rewarding the school with the most participants with a new fitness center. In several other states, most recently in Pennsylvania, grade schools are required to record students’ body mass index and send what are being called “obesity report cards” home to parents. Although the strategies on how to get kids to kick high-calorie snacks vary, the fact that youth fitness is at the forefront of education is reason enough to jump for joy.
