Districts justify maintaining soda machines in schools because the revenue collected is too great to sacrifice. But is it? A recent study of school beverage contracts, the first national one of its kind, analyzed 120 contracts in 16 states. The findings show that, yes, those machines can make a lot of money, but most of it doesn’t come anywhere close to benefiting schools and students.
